The only route in
Valve distributes Deadlock through Steam's playtest system. An existing player opens the game and sends an invite to someone on their Steam friends list. That is the whole mechanism. You cannot buy access, and any site selling a key is selling you nothing.
Finding someone who can invite you
- Open the Deadlock Steam store page. The sidebar lists which of your Steam friends already own it — those are the people who can invite you.
- If none of your friends have it, the game's Steam Community Hub and the r/DeadlockTheGame invite megathread are where players hand out spare invites. You will need to add whoever offers as a Steam friend first, because the invite goes through the friends list.
- Accept the invite from your Steam library. Deadlock then installs like any other free title.
What you are getting into
Deadlock is an early-development playtest, not a finished game. Valve has said it will stay invite-only for the foreseeable future and that it continues to contain temporary art and experimental gameplay. Balance changes land most weeks — every one of them is diffed on our patch pages, so you can see exactly what moved.
Where to start once you are in
- Pick a hero the game itself rates as low complexity — the hero list shows the rating Valve assigns each one.
- Copy a build that is actually winning rather than theorycrafting — every hero has a builds page ranked by confidence-adjusted win rate.
- Learn the item shop before the map. There are 173 items across three categories and knowing the tier-2 staples matters more early than map knowledge does.
